Without any doubt the agriculture has a fundamental meaning for the life and economic development on the island. Some of the here grown products are the onion, the tomato, the potato, the water melon, the honeydew melon and all kinds of cereals.

Special mention deserves the wine of the island produced of the malvasia and moscatel grapes, especially in the area of La Geria. Here one can observe the unique and peculiar way to cultivate the grape-vines growing them in holes made in the fertile ground of the volcanic ashes.

In this excellent wine-growing area of La Geria the cultivators set a high value on pacience and precaution building protective stone walls around the grape-vines in order to keep the wind away from the plants.
