Lanzarote Feast days

Throughout the year there are many feasts to be reveled on Lanzarote. Some are of local character and involve only the people who live in the place, some are for the whole community and some are celebrated by the whole island; e.g. in August is celebrated the San Gines Feast in order to honour the patron of Lanzarote.

In the communities of Teguise and Tias is celebrated the feast of the Virgen del Carmen (the Virgin of Carmen) in July.During the ceremony a procession of people carries an effigy of the Virgin through the streets towards a fishing boat to bring to the port on the sea way. Another important feast is the celebration of the Virgen de los Remedios (the Virgin of the remedies) in Yaiza arranged in Septembre.

During the carnival which is usually celebrated in the last week of february a great prozession of masqueraded and fancy dressed up people march through the streets of Arrecife and the beach avenue of Puerto del Carmen accompanied by numerous tourists participating the dances and parties on the whole island.

The celebration of the Corpus Christi arranged in June is one of the most important feasts on the island, too. For this celebration on the Canary Islands usually beautiful flower carpets are put in front of the churches. But as the amount of rain in Lanzarote is very poor there can be hardly found flowers on the island. That´s why people prepare the carpets with coloured salt just as beautiful as when made of flowers. This is a special way of the Lanzarote people to deal with its deficit of flowers and therefore has become a singular custom of this island.
