Fuerteventura Handicraft

Craft is one of the most important components of the cultural heritage of the island. Art made by hands found in Fuerteventura is ceramics, pottery, the work of draughts, basketry, weaving, wood carving, and stone carving. Every year during the month of May there is a fair where all the craftsmen of Fuerteventura and other islands meet.

The fair promotes the artisan sector of the island, where you can buy all those products of artisan provenance which make them unique and of high quality. The embroideries are perhaps the best known craft of Fuerteventura; draughts are made in different towns with varied styles and techniques.

Pottery has a historic connotation, formed an important part in daily life for the people of the ancient towns, the products they made were used for cooking and to storage food.

Handicrafts made of wood have its maximum expression with the manufacture of musical instruments as the “timple”, guitar and “bandurria”.

An ideal place to learn more details or deepen understanding of Crafts in Fuerteventura is “Ecomuseo de la Acogida” (Ecomuseum for Reception) located in Puerto del Rosario. You can visit craft workshops where demonstrations of different occupations are held.
