Fuerteventura Fauna

The proximity to the African continent and the peculiar highlight of the island are the cause of the condition of wildlife that we find in Fuerteventura. Animals that can be stress are, firstly the goat, its presence extends throughout the island, we can say that this animal is typical of Fuerteventura.

Mammals: One thing is very important that all mammals that are on the island except the bat that came here at his own expense, has been brought by men. The “moruna” squirrel is an animal recently introduced on the island from Africa; it has become one of the favourite animals for tourists, they are very kind and not afraid to people, it is even possible to feed them within walking distance, in some cases by hand.
Also part of the mammals on the island are dogs, goats, pigs, sheep, horse, dromedaries, donkeys, cats and cows. Among domesticated mammals can we mention the shrew, bats and rabbits.

Amphibians: They are represented by the common frog, which lives in wetlands of freshwater to survive.

Reptiles: We can find lizards, or “lisneja”, “lisa majorera” and “perenquenes”.

Birds: Fuerteventura has a lot of species both nesting and migratory. The more individuals birds of the plains, whether sandy or earthy, are: “hubara canaria”, “corredor”, “alcaraván”, “alcaudón real”, “cernícalo” and “abubilla” or “tabobo”. In ravines we find “terrera marismeña”, “tarabilla canaria”, “herrerillo”, “gorrión moruno”, etc. In the mountains we can find nesting birds like “guirre”, “aguililla”, “camachuelo trompetero”, “águila pescadora”, “lechuza común”.
Seabirds we can mention are “pardela” as a nest bird, “chorlitejo” “grande”, “chorlito gris”, “correlismo” and “gaceta” as migratory birds. In Isla de Lobos, birdlife is composed of “petrel”, “pardela chica” “cenicienta” and “paiño común”.

Marine Life: The difference in temperature and salinity of water, caused by ocean currents allow the emergence of different species. There are more variety of species in the area of Barlovento thanks to the cold water from their shores. For the whole excel “espáridos” (bogas, salemas, sargos, chopas, galanas, roqueras, samas, brecas, bocinegros, besugos, etc.).
The more substantial mollusks are “mejillones”, “burgaos”, “canaillas” and “lapas”. In cephalopods proliferate octopus, squid, “chocos” and “potas”.
