Puerto del Carmen Lanzarote. Information of Puerto del Carmen.

Located in the municipality of Tías, to the south of the capital of Arrecife, it is the first urban zone in Lanzarote developed for tourism. We could say, that the tourism as it is today in the island was born in Puerto del Carmen. The first hotels and Apart-hotels are built near the harbor in the area we know as Fariones. As years go by the touristic development starts from Playa Grande and reaches the Hotel San Antonio. The territory of Playa Los Pocillos and Matagorda are the last to join Puerto del Carmen’s touristic offer. The event of great importante in Lanzarote takes place here in Puerto del Carmen, the IRONMAN of Lanzarote. Every year in May over a thousand people practice this exhausting and hard sport challange.

IRONMAN of Lanzarote is the clasification to IRONMAN of HAWAI and many sportsmen say that this is the most demanding IRONMAN of the world.

From all the activities of Puerto del Carmen every year, the most important for the Lanzarote people is on the 8th of September, the day of “La Virgen del Carmen”, seen as the patron saint of the town.

The celebration is for a week and are held in the port, which is transformed into a large amusement park, on stage and the square of the site are carried out various cultural and artistic activities, concerts well attended by residents in Lanzarote, a big party awaited by all.

Another activity to highlight is the carnival in February. The floats and people disguised walk though the avenue from the beaches of Playa Pocillos until the port, inviting all to join in the feast and continues with concerts and live music at the port.

It is important to inform to those who visit us, that when we talk about Puerto del Carmen, we are talking about approximataly 6 kilometers of coast. To explore and know in which area of Puerto del Carmen we find the hotel we will visit, we will divide Puerto del Carmen in 4 sectors.

It is the area that surrounds the port, here we find the old town or village of Puerto del Carmen and Playa Chica.

On the harbor we find a varied gastronomy, the majority are restaurants with typical Canarian or Spanish food. This is the meeting point for the people of Lanzarote, young people go to pubs like San Miguel and Heineken and the older enjoy a fun match of bochas(bowls). Children play soccer on a large square right in front the stage to be used for artistic and cultural presentations or in a small playground for small children.

In this old town we find the market, we can mention “Centro comercial Biosfera”, with shops with famous brands. The Port has a varied range of entertainment, boat excursions, sport fishing, scuba-diving, mini submarines, etc.

In Playa Chica, we find entertainment and rest, it is a cove highly frequented by families with small children, this is a safe place for children because the beach has no waves and is also a beach with excellent services. The fun is offered by the divers, they give instruction classes, here you can also rent jetski, paracraft and banana ski bus.

Sector Varadero

This is the area between the Hotel Fariones and the Hotel San Antonio. The avenue that goes along the beach is called “Avenida de Las Playas” and here you find the widest offer of apartaments, restaurants, discoteques, bars, supermarkets and shops. Between the avenue and the beach happens a great interaccion for those who are in this place. During the day tourists enjoy the beach, visit the restaurants at lunch time and do their shopping, around 17 in the afternoon the visitors return to their hotels and from around 19 o’clock they come back to the avenue to choose a restaurant to enjoy dinner but just before that you can see families visiting the variaty of shops and you can see how much they enjoy to walk by the relaxing beach. Young people visit the bars and discoteques, most famous is “Tropical”, “Ruta 66”, “Casino of Lanzarote”, the bar and restaurant “La Ola” and “Centro Comercial Atlántico” which brings together the largest number of these establishments.

Playa Grande ends right in front of “Centro comercial Atlántico” (Atlantic Market Center), from this place until “Playa de Los Pocillos” the coast is rocky and in here lays a few small and hidden coves, we highlight “La Peñita”, a small beach with access from the Avenue.

Playa Grande Lanzarote

In this area used to lay a salt mine, today it is beach of great dimensions, and the distance between the ocean and the avenue catches the attention, here is common to see small puddles of water created when the tide rises.

Some of the attraccions worth mentioning on this beach is its wide promenade, Plaza Europa, visited by families who come to roller-skate or for a bicicle ride. The market in the avenue is established in two areas, one in the center of the avenue and the other at the end, behind the Hotel Jameos Playa.

This area is prefered by families and couples who wish to enjoy of the ocean in a calm and quiet place. Playa Los Pocillos offers a wide beach, a large promenade but a reduced offer of markets and leisure if we compare it to Playa Grande.

This is the beach where they are performed each year the Triathlon of Puerto del Carmen, as part of The Triathlon Championship of Spain.

This sector is characterised by its tranquility, it is because it is a residential area with very few hotels and trade, this is the area preferred by those seeking tranquillity places where there is no agglomerations of people on the beach or shopping areas.

This sector has a large beach promenade and a very open beach with calm waters. Here we find the commercial centre of Matagorda, with good restaurants, bars, supermarkets and shops of various products, this is the meeting point for those who visit this area.

Many people come to Matagorda walking on the promenade that starts in the area of Playa Grande, one of the main attractions is to see the arrival of the airplanes, it is possible to see them close because the runway of the airport is very close to where Matagorda ends.
