Originally these saltworks were a natural lagoon that over the years were isolated from the sea by volcanic materials disgorged by the eruptions of the volcanos of the Timanfaya Park.
When the lagoon was finally separated from the sea it had emerged a lake of a circumference of 1000m and an average depth of 3m.
At the beginning of the 20st century the saline worker Victor Fernandez created the complicated structure of the Janubio saltworks. From then on, it was the salt produced here to satisfy the island´s major demands, specially emerging from the local fishing industry.
Today the operation of the saltworks is sustained by the EU as demonstration of salt production
