Timanfaya National Park Lanzarote.

Lanzarote. September, 03, 2010.

Being the oldest of the Canary Islands Lanzarote has emerged more than 18 million years ago as result of aggressive volcanic activity. The formation of the Timanfaya National Park as we know it today has been provoced by volcanic eruptions between 1730 and 1736 that smothered the whole island in ashes and volcanic material destroying fields and villages.

Those eruptions left about 100 volcano craters that one can admire in the area of the marvellous Timanfaya National Park.

Today that there isn´t any volcanic activity (the last eruption has been registered in 1824) the scientists study the different interferences in the island´s crust and the magma boards that are close to the surface.

Those don`t constitute any danger to the habitants but are of very impression and interest to the visitors of the National Park. So they can observe how a small amount of water introduced into a hole in the ground transforms itself in a vigorous geyser or how dry grass, when inserted in such hole, is burned as result of the temperature of about 200 degrees reached by the magma boards only a few metres under the surface. Whoever comes to visit the island must go to visit the Timanfaya National Park to assure himself of the large territory of landscape once erased by nature´s power. While making the trip around the Timanfaya by bus one can listen to the story about the volcanic eruptions told by a priest of Yaiza of those times. Furthermore one can take a short ride on a camel`s back in the south of the park to live the experience the islanders lived durante various years when using the animals to move themselves around until the middle of the 20th century. And, to complete this unforgettable experience the Restaurante "El Diablo", situated in the National Park, offers a surprising panorama and a very particular way of preparing its dishes using the geothermal heat emerging from the earth.
